Asian Library book display: Sikh Heritage Month and Vaisakhi

April is observed as Sikh Heritage Month to celebrate Sikh culture, art and history and to appreciate the contributions that the Sikh community has made in Canada. The month of April carries great significance for Sikhs as it was in this month that the Khalsa order was established by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and the last human Sikh Guru. This day is called Vaisakhi (also spelled Baisakhi) and is celebrated on the 13th or 14th of April each year. It also marks the beginning of the spring harvesting season when farmers pay tribute to and thank God for the abundant harvest while praying future prosperity.

For more information about the Sikh Heritage Month and Vaisakhi, come and visit our new display at the Asian Centre foyer! The display will be on until the end of April.

Spring Book Display: LOVE Makes the World Go Round

With each wave of the pandemic, social and physical distancing can leave us feeling isolated from those we care about most. We can reconnect with and relate to one another through stories, sharing experiences of the various relationships we have in our lives, whether these bonds be romantic, familial, or platonic.

Now that we’ve regathered here on campus once again, browse the Asian Library’s special selection of love stories of all kinds in a multitude of Asian languages. Through our displays of our own handpicked favourites, we hope to show how much the Asian Library team loves the UBC community. From legendary romance novels to heartwarming films of friendship, and beautiful poems by renowned poets, we are sure you’ll find something you love in our collection – there’s no better company than a great book!

Welcome to the Asian Library!

New titles of Persian materials available

Happy Nowruz!

Nowruz is the Persian New Year, which starts at the exact moment of spring equinox and conclude 13 days afterwards. This year’s Nowruz begins on March 20. A year ago, just before the Library closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we were able to mount a display featuring a haft-seen spread to celebrate Nowruz. The Haft-Seen (Seven “S”s) is an arrangement of seven symbolic items whose names start with the 15th letter in the Persian alphabet that correspond to S in English.

To support the Persian language and Iranian studies at UBC, Asian Library has been developing a Persian-language collection. We have acquired more new titles recently and they are now available for circulating. Below are some of the examples. Library users can search these titles from the UBC Library catalogue and make request through the Materials Pick-up service.
