Planet-Friendly Wrapping: Furoshiki

Join us for workshops on making and using furoshiki as a sustainable alternative to gift wrapping. Participants can choose to participate in one or both workshops.

Planet-Friendly Wrapping: Making Furoshiki for Sustainable Gift-giving (Part 1 of 2 Workshops)

Date and Time:  Tuesday, Nov. 5th from 3:30-4:30pm
Location: UBC Scarfe Building Room 1128
Attendance: Free, drop-in workshop open to all.

Description: As we approach the holiday season, join us for the first of our two-part workshop series learning about the eco-friendly wrapping technique furoshiki. A traditional practice in Japan for centuries, furoshiki involves folding fabric for a variety of practical uses, including gift-wrapping. Dr. Elly Yazdanpanah, a post-doctoral fellow in Art Education at UBC, will guide us through sewing together sheets of furoshiki out of fabric remnants at this workshop. No previous experience is required, and all supplies will be provided to help you incorporate this unique and sustainable practice into your gift-giving.

Planet-friendly Wrapping (Part 2): Folding Furoshiki for Sustainable Gift-giving

Date and Time: Tuesday, Nov. 26th from 3:30-4:30pm
Location: Main Floor, UBC Asian Library
Attendance: Free. Registration required.

Description: Learn how you can incorporate the sustainable practice of furoshiki fabric wrapping into the upcoming holiday season at the second of our two-part workshop series! Japanese Studies Librarian Tomoko Kitayama Yen and student librarian Mizuki Giffin will provide context into the history and significance of furoshiki in Japanese culture, and will then facilitate a workshop on the folding of furoshiki fabric to be used as gift-wrapping. Participants who attend the first workshop in this series can use the furoshiki fabric that they created. You may also bring your own fabric (roughly 50 cm x 50 cm), or purchase furoshiki from our partners at the Nikkei Centre ahead of time to be picked up at the workshop. Contact us at asian.library@ubc.ca if you are interested in pre-ordering.
